What we do

Connecting city kids with the ocean

At City Kids Surfing, we take children from inner city life and give them the opportunity to experience surfing in British waters.

We are passionate about introducing children, who otherwise would not have the chance, to the transformative power of the ocean.

Through our tailored programme, our Urban Oceaneers learn about themselves, each other and their connection to the natural world. They challenge themselves physically and mentally, building resilience, determination and self-confidence.

Our greatest hope is that the children who come surfing with us will discover a life-long love of the ocean - and know that it will always be there for them, through life’s ups and downs.

Our Mission

We wanted to reach out to children who might not get the opportunity to surf, to give them the experience of surfing in UK waters and learn more about marine conservation and ocean safety.

We introduce children from our chaotic cities to the natural rhythms of waves and tides, to give them a new safe space where they can challenge and learn about themselves, and push out into new adventures.

We want the children to know that the ocean is here and it’s free. And it will always be here for them.

Our Programme

Our Urban Oceaneers learn to swim against elements, learn about beach safety and basic life saving skills. They prove themselves as conserva:onists and plan and deliver a project on an environmental topic, before heading off on a residential trip to the beach.

OUR URBAN OCEANEERS LEARN:

  • Swim fitness

  • Beach Safety

  • Basic Life Saving

  • Marine Conservation

  • Mindfulness

  • Surfing

Through our programme, children develop self-esteem and resilience, learn tools to promote positive mental health and wellbeing and become part a community of friends and mentors who are behind them all the way.

Surf Road Trips

The programme culminates in a three-day road trip to Devon or Cornwall. Like on all great surf road trips, we spend our days at the beach and our evenings sharing stories of the waves.

We stay in beautiful locations and team up with some of the best local surf schools and environmental organisations.

Children are able to build their confidence over the course of the trip, with a carefully designed timetable of activities, including surf lessons, beach games, exploring and social opportunities.

It doesn’t end there!

After their trip, our Urban Oceaneers continue to join us on further trips and training sessions, as advocates and champions of the teams that follow them.
